Mash-up : new opportunities for everyone ?

A web mashup is a website or web application that uses content from more than one source to create a completely new service."

But Mash-up come from Music : when an artist mix 2 songs to create a new one...

Mash ups' origins...

1956 bill buchanan and dickie goodman released the first main-stream mashup single, calling it a "break-in" song. "The flying saucer" was born. It was a reinterpretation of Orson Welles celebrated War of the Worlds mockemergency broadcast which they interspliced with musical snippets that comically dramatized it.

In two words :What is Mash-up ?

Mash-up is a way to create a new service by mixing two technologies or two databases. At the beginning, these technologies (or these databases) does'nt communicate but, thanks to new solutions like Ajax, you can mix it and obtain a true and useful one.

Example is the key to understand what is Mash-up !

The most famous example of Mash-up is housingmaps.com. Indeed, on this website, you can find a house navigating on a map. It uses a houses database (cragilists) and Google Maps.

On the same way, we can also deals with the Chicago crime map create by mixing Google Maps and the list of crime in Chicago.


 

A very useful device !!

 

Examples of Mash-ups give already all the benefits of this technology: for instance, healthmap give the global disease alert.

It’s a mash-up between Google map and health organization data. This device is useful for humanitarian organizations and doctors, but also fo travel agencies (to let them inform their costumers).

 In a useful way, thanks to mash up you can find a flat with google map technology  with rentometer.

Or you can look at your train station and see when the train arrives with "I'm Caltrain" .

 

 

Actually, the Google map technology is the most used device in mash-ups.

 

In the future, we could mix global news and google mag (again !) and push it on CNN.com for instance. Thanks to that new application the readers could have a large idea of what is going on and where.

For example  let's take the mashup with the crime in the USA and the Google earth,  perhap’s  Google was not ok with this alliance. And the initiator not ask Google to use their data. Another risk is that people say many information about their life like the age, photos, or addresses, It’s very dangerous because any silly man can abuse of that to found a victim. And the last risk is for the economy of the firm for example when a mash up use Google earth, this firms don’t win the benefits. The technology it develop doesn't benefit to its and it's not fair as without its knowledges nobody could have created this service !
